The Summer I Built a Church: Creating A Portrait of the Emanuel AME Church of Charleston in Porcelain

I was commissioned this summer to create a memorial tribute to the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC and the Emanuel 9. I spent 500+ hours in the creation of this piece, completed it three weeks before the deadline; the rest of what is happening is a story still to be revealed and resolved. I was hired because in the past I had created architectural portraits in clay of Charleston buildings and used that art to raise funds for non-profit causes in the city. Perhaps this project can help people to heal and take some comfort in this effort made to honor the Fallen. I hope to share this piece with the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in the future when the time is right.
